Real World Problems

Teaching 21st Century skills to 21st Century students requires that we take a long, hard look at real world problems. Unless your students live in a vacuum, they know that bad things happen everywhere, to 'good' and 'bad' people alike. Most of them are aware of real world problems. I've been disappointed to notice that many teachers limited their discussions of the Haiti earthquake to a cursory coverage in current events, and then moved right back to their textbooks. There are primary sources, lesson plans and information all over the Internet going to waste on all kinds of issues, and we are going back to our textbooks!

As an example, here is a short (well, sort of short) list of websites I found that would help me research the Haiti earthquake and apply what I found across a range of curricular areas. If I found these resources in less than two hours, how many more could I find?

This is not by any means an inclusive list; these are just the resources I found while following the searches I did and seeing where the Internet would take me. Try letting your curiosity take you on a journey sometime and see the amazing information you can find out about a real world problem. And give your students the real world - not just the piece of it found in a textbook.
